Abstract
Background and Objectives: To estimate the incidence of the complications after ventilation tube insertion based on systematic review of published case series and randomized studies.

Materials and Methods: 35 articles published in the Korean Journal of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery from 1958 through 2001 were reviewed and evaluated. 15 out of 35 articles evaluated in terms of the complications after ventilation tube insertion used analytic statistics. A meta-analysis study on the complications after ventilation tube insertion in American journal and complication cases of Hallym University Sacred-Heart hospital were reviewed.

Results: Meta-analysis showed that otorrhea occurred in 13% of patients in the postoperative period. Sequelae included tympanosclerosis (30.6%), granulation (2.6%), perforation (3.2%), cholesteatoma (0.7%), obstruction (3.7%) and sen-sorineural hearing loss (2.3%).

Conclusions: The complications after ventilation tube insertion are common but generally variant. We concluded that ongoing otologic surveillance need for all patients with indwelling tubes for a reasonable time period and for a while after tube extrusion.
